£750m investment in School Sport up 2020, welcomed by Parkour UK

Prime Minister David Cameron has committed an additional £750 million to the Primary School Sport Premium between now and the 2020 Olympics to help secure the legacy from London 2012.

Announcing the new commitment, Mr Cameron, said: “Sport is so important because it encourages children to be active, lead a healthy lifestyle, make friends and, of course, have fun.

“But quality school sport has benefits that spread right across the curriculum and beyond – it develops confidence and a sense of achievement, it teaches young people how to rise to a challenge, and nurtures the character and skills that will help them get on and succeed in life.

“It’s an important part of our long-term plan to deliver the best schools and skills for young people. That is why I am committing to guarantee the primary school sports funding until 2020.”

In addition to extending the premium, Mr Cameron also confirmed that Sport England will invest £18 million of National Lottery funding through the new ‘Primary Spaces – Improving outdoor PE and sports facilities’ fund.

The funding will ensure primary schools across England have better equipment and outdoor facilities – for example, turning a concrete playground into a quality outdoor area for physical and sporting activities such as Parkour/Freerunning, using innovative design to make good use of small space.

Priority will be given to schools which currently have limited outside space which can be used for PE and sport.  Applications for funding will open on 24 February with successful schools expected to receive on average £30,000.

The Prime Minister also announced an additional £11 million investment for the Sainsbury’s School Games to fund School Games Organisers for a fifth academic year. This will further help continue to inspire children and young people to take up competitive school sport.

Mike Diaper, Sport England’s Director of Community Sport, said: “Having the space and opportunities for PE and to play sport as a child is vital in developing a lifelong sporting habit. We delighted to be making these investments which will give children the space to start enjoying PE and sport and the chance to experience competitive sport in the School Games.”

International Womens Day: Parkour Clamjamfrie, Glasgow 8th & 9th March

Parkour UK Members Glasgow Parkour Girls are organising the first International Women’s Day Parkour Clamjamfrie, with a two-day gathering in Glasgow on March 8th and 9th. The event will bring together women from across Scotland, the UK and internationally.

The Clamjamfrie will be structured to provide coaching for women of all abilities, with especial focus on those new to the discipline, including absolute beginners. So if you’ve wanted to give parkour a try, this is the perfect opportunity! This event is a welcoming, supportive environment for women to challenge themselves in new physical disciplines, and to learn from each other.

Coaches from the UK, Italy and Sweden will provide varied insights into training methods, and we will be welcoming participants from far and wide to celebrate women in Parkour! There will be skill-sharing sessions for participants to learn from women accomplished in other movement disciplines, such as circus skills, strongwoman and capoeira.

WHY?

‘Clamjamfrie’ is an old Scots word, meaning a large and loud group. This sums up our aims: we want to bring together a big pack of women, to train and laugh together, and to loudly declare our presence (even if we’re landing softly!)

WHEN?

The Clamjamfrie will take place on March 8th & 9th 2014, to coincide with International Women’s Day. This will be two days, packed full of training, and includes a wee social event on Saturday evening (to make sure there are loads of opportunities for chat!)

Tickets for the event are just £20 pounds, and that includes two days of training and an event t-shirt. You can buy your ticket here.

New Parkour Park in Taunton, Somerset

Our partners Freemove recently completed the installation of a new Parkour Park in Taunton, Somerset. The facility launched in mid-Decemnber as is now open to the public and is free to access.

As more and more Parkour Parks emerge we are seeing the direct and beneficial impact of the publication of the new British Standard for Parkour Equipment, BS10075:2013. Since its publication in February 2013 it is enabling local authorities, schools, colleges, universities, sports centres, land owners, manufacturers and installers to build Parkour facilities and equipment that are fit-for-purpose, safe and to the recognised standard.

Additionally BS10075:2013 is now being developed into a European Standard with the pioneering work led by Parkour UK being used as the ‘base document’ for the development of the EN standard.
