The new parkour park was part of a wider development of the Merstham recreation ground. The project had a total of around £3m of investment, with funding from Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, Surrey County Council, Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy and the government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The Council also secured an additional £500,000 funding for the project from the National Lottery Community Fund which will be used to invest in facilities.
On top of a new parkour area the park, which is just outside of Redhill, has seen a huge revamp, complete with a new pavilion, play area and outdoor gym. The area has been transformed with lots of activities for children and young people to encourage outdoor activity in the area.
The parkour park was designed and developed by Parkour Designs.
"Tasked by the local council with creating a space for people of all ages to move, train, get fit and stay healthy, we have been working with Blakedown Landscapes to produce something truly functional. In design, simple is often effective. There’s no need for hi-tech, digital playgrounds when all evidence shows that humans respond best to challenging and unique obstacle-rich environments." - Parkour Designs
The parkour park opened to the public on Friday 9th May, and the council are working on an "official opening" for later this month.
