International Womens Day: Parkour Clamjamfrie, Glasgow 8th & 9th March

Parkour UK Members Glasgow Parkour Girls are organising the first International Women’s Day Parkour Clamjamfrie, with a two-day gathering in Glasgow on March 8th and 9th. The event will bring together women from across Scotland, the UK and internationally.

The Clamjamfrie will be structured to provide coaching for women of all abilities, with especial focus on those new to the discipline, including absolute beginners. So if you’ve wanted to give parkour a try, this is the perfect opportunity! This event is a welcoming, supportive environment for women to challenge themselves in new physical disciplines, and to learn from each other.

Coaches from the UK, Italy and Sweden will provide varied insights into training methods, and we will be welcoming participants from far and wide to celebrate women in Parkour! There will be skill-sharing sessions for participants to learn from women accomplished in other movement disciplines, such as circus skills, strongwoman and capoeira.

WHY?

‘Clamjamfrie’ is an old Scots word, meaning a large and loud group. This sums up our aims: we want to bring together a big pack of women, to train and laugh together, and to loudly declare our presence (even if we’re landing softly!)

WHEN?

The Clamjamfrie will take place on March 8th & 9th 2014, to coincide with International Women’s Day. This will be two days, packed full of training, and includes a wee social event on Saturday evening (to make sure there are loads of opportunities for chat!)

Tickets for the event are just £20 pounds, and that includes two days of training and an event t-shirt. You can buy your ticket here.

New Parkour Park in Taunton, Somerset

Our partners Freemove recently completed the installation of a new Parkour Park in Taunton, Somerset. The facility launched in mid-Decemnber as is now open to the public and is free to access.

As more and more Parkour Parks emerge we are seeing the direct and beneficial impact of the publication of the new British Standard for Parkour Equipment, BS10075:2013. Since its publication in February 2013 it is enabling local authorities, schools, colleges, universities, sports centres, land owners, manufacturers and installers to build Parkour facilities and equipment that are fit-for-purpose, safe and to the recognised standard.

Additionally BS10075:2013 is now being developed into a European Standard with the pioneering work led by Parkour UK being used as the ‘base document’ for the development of the EN standard.

Pre-Application Re-submitted for Recognition with the UK Sports Councils

Today, 4th November 2013 Parkour UK has re-submitted a pre-application for recognition with the UK Sports Councils.

The re-submission fully addresses the points raised by UK Recognition Panel (which is made up of representatives from Sport England, Sport Wales, Sport Scotland, Sport NI & UK Sport), in their decision letter dated 12th July 2013, following our original submission of a pre-application on 1st March 2013.

We implemented a number of changes at our 2013 Annual General Meeting on Monday 7th October 2013. These included the amendment of voting rights & our dissolution clause. Which was voted on by ALL members of Parkour UK. In addition, we furthered our implementation of the Voluntary Code of Good Governance, by appointing our third Independent Non-Executive Director – Joy Johnston.

These are significant and positive milestones in the on-going development and recognition of Parkour/Freerunning in the UK.

We will keep the community, members and partners updated on the progress of our pre-application for recognition.

Joy Johnston appointed as an Independent Director

At our AGM on Monday 7th October 2013, Joy Johnston (formerly Tottman) was appointed as an independent director with overwhelming support from the membership and the Board of Parkour UK.

Joy is Governance Manager for UK Sport, working as a member of their Governance Team to ensure that UK Sport’s grant awards processed for NGB’s and system partners reflect their obligation to further develop world class standards of governance in sport. Joy recently spent 3 years working with the Sport and Recreation Alliance (formerly CCPR) to help support and improve governance and legal compliance within sports governing bodies across the UK.  She gained an in-depth knowledge of the internal and external challenges faced by sports governing bodies and published numerous guidance documents on governance and leadership for sports bodies. Joy holds a BA Hons in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford and is currently studying for an LLM in Sports Law at De Montfort University, Leicester. In her spare time Joy is an International Ice Hockey Federation referee and officiated at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She is also passionate about Parkour/Freerunning and has been a keen supporter of Parkour UK for a number of years.

Joy becomes our third Independent Director, alongside Dominic Edington & Stephen Micthell, who is also our Independent Chair.  This forms part of our drive to fully implement the Voluntary Code of Good Governance, which Parkour UK was one of the first NGB’s to sign up to code when launched in 2011.
